Amoriano of Rhodes 2022, Kounakis Wine Review

amoriano of rhodes wineThe “Amoriano of Rhodes 2022” from Kounakis Winery, a Designation of Origin Rhodes wine, is an impressive showcase of the Amoriano grape variety’s unique characteristics. This 100% Amoriano red dry wine, cultivated in the semi-mountainous regions around Embona village, is a testament to the meticulous care and innovative production protocols of Kounakis Winery.

Visually, the wine presents a deep dark red hue with hints of blue, suggesting its rich and intense nature. The aroma is a delightful array of ripe red fruits like blackberry, black currant, cherry, and strawberry. This fruity bouquet is masterfully balanced with background notes that reflect the wine’s terroir, adding complexity and distinctiveness to its profile.

Upon tasting, the wine unveils its well-rounded bouquet. The initial fruity notes are seamlessly integrated with the wine’s structure, offering a harmonious blend of flavors and textures. The tannins, skillfully smoothed through the winemaking process, are present yet not overpowering. They contribute to the wine’s full body while ensuring a smooth and pleasant finish. The long aftertaste that follows is a memorable experience, leaving a lasting impression that beckons for another sip.

The winemaking process, involving careful selection of yeast and manual punch downs during fermentation in oak barrels, has evidently played a pivotal role in enhancing the wine’s organoleptic properties. The choice to ferment at a lower temperature and the subsequent aging on lees for ten months contribute to the wine’s complexity and smoothness, particularly in its tannins.

This “Amoriano of Rhodes 2022” is an excellent choice for those who appreciate a wine with a strong character, complex aromas, and a well-balanced palate. It’s a decent representation of the Amoriano grape and a brilliant example of the high-quality wines produced by Kounakis Winery. It would make a valuable addition to any wine collection and is versatile enough to pair with a variety of dishes, enhancing any culinary experience.

The “Amoriano of Rhodes 2022” by Kounakis Winery offers an exceptional value, available for purchase directly from the winery at around 14€. This price point makes it an accessible choice for wine enthusiasts looking to experience the unique qualities of the Amoriano grape without a significant investment. Its combination of quality, flavor, and affordability ensures that this wine is not only a delight to the senses but also a smart addition to any wine lover’s collection. Whether you are expanding your wine horizons or simply looking for a high-quality wine at a reasonable price, the “Amoriano of Rhodes 2022” stands out as a compelling choice.

Armenistis Organic White by Kounakis Winery Review

image showing armenistis white wine rhodesThe “Armenistis Organic 2022,” priced at 14,00€ at the winery, represents a stellar example of a Protected Geographical Indication Dodecanese white dry wine. This organic wine, predominantly made from Moschato grapes complemented by Chardonnay, Malagouzia, and Sauvignon Blanc, showcases the unique viticultural traditions and terroir of the region.

Visually, Armenistis presents a light yellow color with vibrant green highlights, promising a refreshing and lively experience. The wine greets the nose with a complex array of green aromas, where one can discern crisp apple, herbal undertones, and a pronounced minerality reflective of the limestone-rich soils of its vineyards.

On the palate, Armenistis reveals its full-bodied nature, blending rich flavors with a high acidity that ensures a harmonious balance. The minerality is again prominent, contributing to a rounded mouthfeel that engages and delights. The long aftertaste of the wine adds an additional layer of complexity, leaving a memorable impression and a pleasant finish.

Armenistis is a product of meticulous organic farming and careful winemaking processes. The use of ungrafted Moschato grapes from semi-mountainous organic vineyards under the shadow of Prophet Ilias mountain, combined with early harvesting and innovative fermentation techniques using wild yeast, results in a wine that is both expressive and distinctive. The aging on the lees for six months further enhances its character, resulting in a blend that is both nuanced and flavorful.

This wine is not only a representation of the skill and dedication of its winemakers but also a testament to the unique qualities of the Dodecanese terroir, rare to find in many cases in the modern winemaking (at least at Rhodes!). Armenistis is an excellent choice for those who appreciate organic, full-bodied white wines with a complex profile. Its affordability and quality make it a valuable addition to any wine collection and a delightful choice for various culinary pairings.
