The official announcement

Dear visitors and residents of our island,For the correct and clear information of all those interested in the dramatic developments in our country, the areas of Lindos, Vlyha, Psaltos and Pefki are completely safe. The fire did not threaten the above places and they were never in danger. Clearly the fear and pain of all of us for what is happening on our island makes us responsible to defend with all our strength the integrity, not only of the Lindians, but of every Rhodian, who is giving his life to save our island at this moment. Lindos, on a business level, is running smoothly and on a visitor level, as a tourist destination, remains safe. The enormous ecological cost that our Rhodes has suffered, the pain and the unstoppable effort of the Rhodians to save our island will haunt us for years to come. The soul of the island's inhabitants has become a global example of humanity! Let us be strong and united to fight to the end against the beast of fire and put an end to this nightmare we are living.

Sincerely,
The President and members of the Municipal Community of Lindos

Rhodes Rising from the Ashes: A Testament to Community Resilience

In the wake of one of the most devastating wildfires in its recent history, the Greek island of Rhodes is demonstrating an unparalleled level of community resilience. The inferno, which reduced 135,000 acres of lush forest to cinders, destroyed over 50,000 olive trees, wildlife habitats and dozens of houses, left an indelible mark on the island's residents and its natural landscape.

Rhodes became the centre of international attention when thousands of tourists were evacuated as the blazes rampaged across the island. Now, several months after the fires have ceased, the scorched terrain bears silent witness to the destructive power of the flames and highlights the increasing urgency of the global climate crisis—a crisis UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres fittingly termed a "time of global boiling."

In the small town of Kiotari, once renowned for its picturesque views, residents are faced with the sombre reality of burnt horizons where verdant vistas once stood. In the charred remains of home gardens and once-thriving establishments, the spirit of hope is rekindled not only by personal fortitude but also through the sense of solidarity that has brought the community together in these trying times.

The smouldering landscapes tell stories of loss and grief; loss of homes built by hand, loss of familiar comfort, and loss of a sense of safety. Yet amidst this loss, the people of Rhodes are banding together to repair and rebuild their lives and their environment. This resurgence is powered by the collective effort of residents and the voluntary support of local youth, who bravely fought against the blaze, symbolising the courage of the community.

With the fires extinguished, the focus has turned towards restoration and reflection. Locals who witnessed the destruction of their personal histories are finding strength in unity and purpose in the face of the climate emergency. Many are contemplating the future with a renewed sense of responsibility and a deepened commitment to sustainable living.

Rhodes, once famed for its ancient Colossus, is now witnessing the rise of a modern-day colossus in the form of its resilient inhabitants. The migrant returnees, business owners, and families who call Rhodes home each bring a narrative of resilience and offer a piece of themselves to the mosaic of recovery.

The island's metamorphosis from a place of tragedy to a beacon of human resilience is a poignant reminder of the indomitable spirit of those facing the climate crisis. It's a spirit fuelled by optimism and a community's unconditional support for one another.

The aftermath of the fires laid bare the vulnerabilities and challenges posed by climate change, but it has simultaneously ignited a fierce determination within the Rhodian community. The people of Rhodes, armed with shovels, water bottles, and an unwavering resolve to protect their land, stand united in the face of adversity. This unity exemplifies the true essence of community resilience, turning Rhodes's story into one of hope, adaptation, and an ongoing struggle against climate change.

Rhodes Fire Investigation: Unveiling the Tragedy

Introduction

In July, a catastrophic fire razed over 180,000 acres of land on the island of Rhodes, leaving in its wake a pressing need for answers and accountability. Spearheading the investigation into the calamitous events is Dimitris Liotsios, an esteemed officer of the Fire Department with a history of meticulous investigation work.

Investigation Overview

The fire that commenced on July 18 remained untamed for ten days, a dire period during which the Rhodes Prosecutor's Office sought a trustworthy individual to lead the inquiry. Their choice, Dimitris Liotsios, was responsible for the probing reports on previous fires in Mati and Kineta, where he identified mismanagement and flawed communication amongst agencies.

Challenges and Obstacles

From the investigation's onset, Liotsios navigated through a labyrinth of bureaucratic barriers. Furthermore, unsettling reports suggested attempts to sway the investigation's direction, as indicated by Liotsios' recount of intense pressure to obscure evidence. Despite these hurdles, he remained resolute, producing comprehensive reports and enduring extensive court testimonies. The sincerity in his duty was unquestionable – a testimony to his integrity and commitment to uncovering the truth.

Results and Testimony

Liotsios's investigation yielded detailed reports, elucidating the mishandling and operational flaws in fire management. Through his unwavering testimony, lasting over 100 hours in court, the fog around the Rhodes catastrophe began to lift. The documents he produced were fundamental in providing clarity and direction to the calamitous aftermath. Liotsios evidenced a deep-rooted sense of duty to justice, forsaking any personal comfort for the cause of truth.
